5. Understanding the process of mapping textures onto objects is absolutely important for the accuracy and level of detail required for a model of your set and it is worth spending some time on experimenting with various methods.

3D Studio Max has a library of images that can be used for texture maps. But I find that it is necessary to import my own textures from scanned images, then manipulate them in Photoshop. You can create your own texture samples as you will do in traditional model making then scan those. Eventually you will build up your own library of textures.
